WiTrace

The WiTrace server

To tell whether it’s the Wi-Fi or the internet. Put the server on a USB drive and open it on any computer on the same network: the phone finds it on its own and measures only the path to it.

How to use

  1. Unzip it and copy the folder to a USB drive.
  2. Plug the computer into the router with a network cable or, without a cable, keep it in the same room as the Wi-Fi router. On it, double-click the app for its system. The icon appears next to the clock.
  3. Open WiTrace on the phone, on the same network. It finds the server on its own.

A cable is best: with the computer on Wi-Fi, the measurement crosses the air twice and shows less than the network delivers where you are. Nothing is installed: the server runs and keeps its settings on the USB drive, not on the computer.

First run

Mac

On first run, the Mac asks whether you really want to open the app: choose Open. Allow Local Network, which is how the phone finds the server, and access to the removable volume, where it keeps its settings.

Windows

On first run, it prepares the server on the USB drive, which takes a few seconds. If “Windows protected your PC” appears, choose More info > Run anyway. In the firewall, allow private networks.

Linux

If a double-click does not open it, right-click > Run as a Program. Without the icon next to the clock, stop it from the panel that opens in the browser.

To check the file, compare it with the release’s SHA256SUMS.
