WiTrace app privacy

This page describes app version 1.0.1.

In short

WiTrace has no account, shows no ads and uses no analytics or tracking service. Your walks stay on your phone. Only the measurement traffic and what you choose to share ever leave the device.

What stays on the phone

Each walk keeps the map, the path walked, the shape of the floor and walls the camera saw, the Wi-Fi measurements (with the network name and the access point's identifier) and the phone model. It keeps no photo or video from the camera. Settings keep the technician's and company's names that go on the report.

What crosses the network

To measure, the app exchanges test data with the WiTrace server on your network, if there is one, or with Cloudflare (speed.cloudflare.com). That data is only the measurement load. To find the WiTrace server, the app looks on the local network the phone is on.

Permissions

  • Camera: for augmented reality and to read the WiTrace server's code.
  • Location: Android and iPhone only let an app read the Wi-Fi network's name with it.
  • Local network, on iPhone: to find the WiTrace server.
  • The signal shortcut, on iPhone, if you add it: it reads the Wi-Fi signal and hands it to WiTrace inside the phone itself.

Sharing

Nothing leaves the phone until you tap Share. There you choose the PDF report, or the report with the walk's logs, and the app it goes through.

Deleting

Discarding a walk sends it to the app's bin, which is emptied the next time the app opens. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it kept.

When this changes

If the app starts keeping or sending anything else, this page changes before the version that does it.
